engine and C-4 transmission
Future Plans For Your Ride: The stang
needs a total restoration. I intend to keep it mostly
original, except for things like air intake, steering
wheel, exhaust, tires and rims. The color will be cherry
red or fire engine red with black stripe and the
interior seats will be red on black. The color will be
in honor of the Firefighters.
Car History: This stang has been sitting on
someone's front lawn, about 1 1/2 miles from my home,
for about 17 years with no movement.. Summer, Winter,
Spring, Fall...sunny, raining, snow..you name it. I know
because I have passed it going by everyday for the past
17 years. I must have driven by about 1000 times. Then
the "stang bug" hit me hard...My quest was to go look
for a stang like my old one..a 1966 Mustang Coupe, 289.
Boy did I love that car.
I had witnessed a motor vehicle accident about 3 years
ago, on my street in which the driver passed away. The
driver was a volunteer firefighter and had lost control
of his vehicle while responding to a call. About May of
2008, I was driving past the 1968 stang and something,
someone, a feeling, hunch or whatever you may call it..I
felt compelled to back up my vehicle and drive up the
driveway where the stang sat and rang the front
doorbell. I asked if the stang was for sale and was told
that numerous people had asked the same question and the
answer given was always no. This time, I was told to
come back another day so that we can talk about the
mustang since she felt that now was the time to "let it
go". I visited her another day and we spoke about her
husband and the stang and how he always tinkered with
it. She told me that she has no paper work or does not
know where it is in the house. I told her that I would
help her out with the paper work, all I needed was the
VIN numbers. Took me about a month of tracking down
prior owners. I started with vehicle made and sold in
New Jersey. Sold and transported to Florida, registered
in Florida, sold again and transported to New Jersey.
The "owner" of the 1968 stang called me so that we could
talk about the car and settle on a price for it. I told
her that I was able to trace prior ownership of the
stang and needed her help if I bought the car. She told
me how she found an envelope by her fridge and when she
opened it she found the registration from New Jersey
with the "sold to" section left blank. That's when she
told me that her husband was the volunteer firefighter
that had passed away in that vehicle accident on my
street 3 years ago. She also said that since she saw
that I have a passion for the stang, she was going to
give it to me as a gift. I am forever grateful for this
gift and will restore it. Her only request is to see the
stang when I finally finish it.
What made me back up my car and drive up that driveway?
Why did I witness that accident? Why the sudden Stang
bug? Could it be that for most of my life, I was also a
community volunteer. I am forever grateful for this
gift.
